چکیده

We investigate the phase response properties of the Hindmarsh–Rose model of neuronal bursting using burst phase response curves (BPRCs) computed with an infinitesimal perturbation approximation and by direct simulation of synaptic input. The resulting BPRCs have a significantly more complicated structure than the usual Type I and Type II PRCs of spiking neuronal models, and they exhibit highly timing-sensitive changes in the number of spikes per burst that lead to large magnitude phase responses. We use fast-slow dissection and isochron calculations to analyze the phase response dynamics in both weak and strong perturbation regimes. Our findings include the following: (1) The phase response during the active segment of the burst displays considerable sensitivity (even for very weak perturbations) closely associated with spike times in the perturbed burster. (2) The isochron geometry of the fast subsystem explains the shape and sensitivity of the recorded phase response during the active bursting segment. (3) The onset of the homoclinic bifurcation in the fast subsystem during the burst cycle strongly affects the isochron geometry. (4) Strong perturbations may trigger changes in spike number per burst, sometimes accompanied by early burst initiation or termination, leading to large magnitude phase responses that cannot be accounted for using the theory of weakly coupled oscillators.

Global Isochrons and Phase Sensitivity of Bursting Neurons

Phase sensitivity analysis is a powerful method for studying (asymptotically periodic) bursting neuron models. One popular way of capturing phase sensitivity is through the computation of isochrons—subsets of the state space that each converge to the same trajectory on the limit cycle. However, the computation of isochrons is notoriously difficult, especially for bursting neuron models. In [W. ...

Stability Analysis of Phase-Locked Bursting in Inhibitory Neuron Networks

Networks of neurons, which form central pattern generators (CPGs), are important for controlling animal behaviors. Of special interest are configurations or CPG motifs composed of reciprocally inhibited neurons, such as half-center oscillators (HCOs). Bursting rhythms of HCOs are shown to include stable synchrony or in-phase bursting, which is a phase-locked state that has zero phase difference...

Understanding spiking and bursting electrical activity through piece-wise linear systems

In recent years there has been an increased interest in working with piece-wise linear caricatures of nonlinear models. Such models are often preferred over more detailed conductance based models for their small number of parameters and low computational overhead. Moreover, their piece-wise linear (PWL) form, allow the construction of action potential shapes in closed form as well as the calcul...

Gap junctions and emergent rhythms

Gap junction coupling is ubiquitous in the brain, particularly between the dendritic trees of inhibitory interneurons. Such direct non-synaptic interaction allows for direct electrical communication between cells. Unlike spike-time driven synaptic neural network models, which are event based, any model with gap junctions must necessarily involve a single neuron model that can represent the shap...

Phase resetting and phase locking in hybrid circuits of one model and one biological neuron.

To determine why elements of central pattern generators phase lock in a particular pattern under some conditions but not others, we tested a theoretical pattern prediction method. The method is based on the tabulated open loop pulsatile interactions of bursting neurons on a cycle-by-cycle basis and was tested in closed loop hybrid circuits composed of one bursting biological neuron and one burs...
